There’s this elated feeling that you get when you discover an artist that you’ve never heard before, and end up liking a lot. And there’s the feeling that you get when you discover that said artist is already on their second album. As a music fan, it’s that “how did I not hear about this artist before?” kind of disbelief. I experienced both of those recently. These mixed feelings were brought on by Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow‘s new album, Post Tropical.

Post Tropical is McMorrow’s second effort. His first was entitled Early In the Morning and was released in 2010. Like its predecessor, Post Tropical still has McMorrow’s haunting falsetto, and Bon Iver-esque sound to it. The difference, however, this time around is the addition of an icy, almost James Blake-esque in sound, production to it. A production that compliments McMorrow’s falsetto really well.

My favorite track is album opener “Cavalier.” It’s the perfect example of the aforementioned description, and a perfect example of the direction of the album. Check it out for yourself below.

Based off the amount of times that I’ve played this song and its album, in the past few days, I’d say it’s a solid bet on being one of my favorite records of the year…and it’s only January! I love it.
