[MP3] Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band- “Stay Away [Nirvana Cover]”

When I was nine-years-old I saw something on television that left me dumbfounded. At the time, I didn’t know what to make of it. All I knew was that I wanted to experience it again and again. What I saw was this: The video for Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

To this day, I still remember the feeling I got when I saw the opening shot, and heard the opening guitar chord. It was a sense of confusion, mixed with elation. Confusion, because, like I said, at the the time I didn’t know what to make of it. And elation, well, because I was experiencing something new, something special, something that, like the teens in the video, made me want to jump up-and-down and, well, just lose my shit.

With the twentieth anniversary of Nevermind—the album from which this song came—upon us, I’ve been thinking about that feeling. And from the looks of it, so have others. Case in point: SPIN Magazine. Their upcoming issue is dedicated to Nevermind. Or as they put it—The 20th Anniversary of the Album That Changed Everything. What Nevermind Means Now. They even included a Tribute Album called Newermind, which features in original track order, covers done by Titus Andronicus, Vaselines, Meat Puppets, Amanda Palmer, and more.

My favorite of the bunch comes from soul artist Charles Bradley, who does a pretty impressive, well, soul cover of “Stay Away.” That’s it below.
