[MP3] Austra-Lose It

Earlier this week I fell in love…with a band that is. That band is Canadian trio Austra.

If you’re an avid music-site or blog reader than you’re more than likely already familiar with the trio. If not, then here’s a bit of background: Austra is comprised of  lead singer Katie Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf. Together they craft new wave-esque pop songs with classical/operatic overtones.  Those overtones are provided by Stelmanis; whom at the age of 10 joined the Canadian Children’s Opera, sang for the Canadian Opera Company, and pursued a career in opera until she decided that she wanted to “make classical music with really fucked up, distorted crazy shit on there.” That mixture of classical music, and “fucked up, distorted crazy shit” is all over Feel It Break, the trio’s debut album out 5/17 via Domino in the U.S. and Paper Bag Records in Canada.

One of my favorite songs off the album (of which there are many) is “Lose It”—a shimmering new-wave dance pop song that features Stelmanis stunning operatic voice.  I love it. Matter of fact, I loved it on first listen. Listen (and grab it) below.

If you like it, click on over to NPR Music and listen to Feel It Break in its entirety until the day of its release. It’s worth the time.

My current obsession. So good. “beat and the pulse” is a great track too.
