Mercury Prize 2011 Nominees

Yesterday, in London, the shortlist for this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year was announced. The winner of the Mercury Prize is selected by a group of “industry experts” who will then announce its recipient in a ceremony hosted by Jools Holland in September. Aside from the distinction of Album of the Year, the winner also gets £20k.

Last year’s prize went to the xx for their self-titled debut (which I liked but, I didn’t think it was the Album of the Year). Looking at this year’s list, however, I don’t see a clear winner. Sure, I have my favorites out of it. But, it looks like its going to be a tough one for those experts.

Full disclosure: I’ve only heard four (PJ, Adele, Blake, and Ana) of the twelve nominees. Six (Elbow, Everything Everything, Katy B, King Creosote, Metronomy, and Tinie Tempah) of them I have in my To Listen To queue, and the other two (Ghostpoet, and Gwilym Simcock) I’d never even heard of.

List of nominees:
Adele – 21
Anna Calvi – Anna Calvi
Elbow – Build a Rocket Boys!
Everything Everything – Man Alive
Ghostpoet – Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam
Gwilym Simcock – Good Days at Schloss Elmau
James Blake – James Blake
Katy B – On a Mission
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins – Diamond Mine
Metronomy – The English Riviera
PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy

My Favorites:
Adele – 21
Anna Calvi – Anna Calvi
James Blake – James Blake
PJ Harvey – Let England Shake

Out of the four, I think the panel will vote for James Blake. To me, it should be between Adele and PJ. Either of those two, to me, would be justifiable. Who do you think will win?
