If you’ve been reading this blog for a bit, you’d more than likely be aware that for the past two years I’ve gone to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival—this year will be my third trek out there.  In the months leading up to the fest, after the line-up has been announced, I spend some time researching the bands on the bill that I’m not entirely or at all familiar with (yes, I realize how geeky that sounds, but hey, I’m a music geek). Out of the few bands that I’ve googled so far, none have made a bigger impression on me then Foster the People. More specifically, their debut self-titled EP.

Foster the People hail from Los Angeles, and make dance-pop songs à la MGMT (before they went down the psychedelic-pop route).  For instance, EP opener “Houdini” sounds like the dude from Jamiroquai singing over an Electric Feel-esque chorus. While, “Pumped Up Kicks” will give you an idea what a collaboration between Gorillaz and MGMT would sound like. Which, in case you’re wondering, sounds good. And closer “Helena Beat” with its catchy beat and chorus will, well, make you want to dance. It made me want to, and hell, I don’t dance. If that isn’t a tell of how great this EP is then I don’t know what is.

I can’t wait to see what these guys can do for a whole album.

Foster the People EP is out via Star Time Intl.
