Song of the Week

Beat Connection

As you can tell from past posts, I’m a fan of that fusion of indie-pop and electronica. Something about a well-crafted song in that genre that makes me want to shoulder-dip whenever I hear it. Case in point: Beat Connection‘s new single, “Rosealene,” off their new record Product 3 out 10/23 via ANTI-.  It’s a three minute slice of syrupy, and undulating indie-pop-tronica goodness. Check it out below.

Following their appearance at Austin City Limits Music Festival, Beat Connection will kick off their headlining tour at the end of the month.

Here’s a confession: I tend to be a tad on the obsessive-compulsive side when it comes to a song that I like. In other words, I’ll play the crap out of it. So much so that, if my iPod or Spotify could speak, it would say  “Seriously. You really need to stop listening to this same song over and over again.” The perfect example of this comes in the form of my favorite EDM (if you don’t know, it means Electronic Dance Music) song of the moment. The song is called, “Language” and it’s produced by North Carolina native Porter Robinson.

“Language” is an epic—six minutes and change—Electro House track. The whole track is great. But, the kicker, for me, is the chorus/build-up. It comes in at the half-way point, and it’s so good.

Check it out below, and just try not to play this track more than once. I dare you!

“Language” is available as a single on iTunes.

Yesterday, in an effort to generate more traffic/interest (hopefully!) to this site, I started a Tumblr. And today, it saw its first post; Rihanna’s song “We Found Love” (Feat. Calvin Harris). I have to say, I didn’t expect to like a Rihanna song as much as I liked this one. A lot of its appeal, at least to me, lies in the production of DJ/Producer Calvin Harris.

The Electronica number he constructed strikes the perfect balance between Ready For the Club and Ready For Top-40 Radio without sounding completely cheesy or completely overwrought. The other component that works in this song is the interplay between it and Rihanna’s voice. Harris manages to not overpower Rihanna’s voice entirely with the songs beat. Instead it pulsates slightly beneath it allowing Rihanna’s message of love found-and-lost to be loud and clear.

In short, this song is pretty damn catchy. Real Talk!

Talk That Talk is out 11/21, but “We Found Love” is available now, as a single, on iTunes.
